OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KTUL) -- Attention crochet artists and knitters: You can help bring awareness to Shaken Baby Syndrome.
According to the center, that frustration over crying infants is the No. 1 trigger for shaking of abusing a baby, and these purple caps are to serve as a reminder of the dangers of shaking a baby.
During November and December, 41 Oklahoma birthing centers will send caps home with all newborns. Now state health officials are recruiting crochet artists and knitters to help meet this year's goal of 4,300.
Volunteers can knit or crochet baby boy or girl caps of any shade of purple with soft, baby-friendly yarn. Caps can have fun colors and patterns as long as they are at least 50-percent purple and are free of straps, strings or other choking hazards.
Purple caps are accepted year-round but only those received by Oct. 1 will be included in this year's distribution.
